Sault Ste. Marie BESS Project

SB Energy and it partners propose to construct a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility at 95 Huron St., Sault Ste. Marie. The BESS facility is a green energy system that uses batteries to store energy during the day when there is an abundance of solar electricity being generated and discharge the energy at peak hours when demand is the greatest. The BESS facility will support the municipal grid in the event of power outages or other power needs. If approved, the proposed facility will enhance regional grid reliability, reduce the likelihood of power disruptions, and increase the industrial base of the community while helping Ontario meet its energy transition goals.

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)

The IESO delivers key services across Ontario’s electricity sector, including: real-time power system management; planning for the province’s future energy needs; enabling conservation; and designing a more efficient electricity marketplace to support sector evolution.

To address Ontario’s current and future electrical supply needs, the IESO has issued a request for proposals (LT1 RFP) to provide reliability services and strengthen the grid in Ontario.

SB Energy and its partners are working to submit an LT1 RFP response for approval to build the proposed Sault Ste. Marie BESS facility. This process includes working closely with municipal staff and the IESO to obtain necessary approvals as well as soliciting comments and feedback from the public.

BESS Facility Benefits

BESS facilities improve the way that we generate, deliver, and consume energy, providing many regional local benefits.

  • The Sault Ste. Marie BESS facility will benefit customers by offsetting consumer costs and reducing economic losses, increasing grid reliability, and mitigating the impact of extreme weather events by avoiding costly disruptions.
  • The Sault Ste. Marie BESS facility represents a $600 million investment in Sault Ste. Marie and will be a long-term asset for the area. The project will improve grid resiliency and provide economic benefits through job creation and property tax revenue payments, which can be used to support local schools and emergency services – all without the need to raise local taxes.
  • The Sault Ste. Marie BESS facility will help Ontario meet its energy transition goals by enabling us to power the grid using renewable sources of generation, even when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing.
